COLOMBO, July 24: Holding a noisy demonstration against the wave of assassinations carried out by the LTTE in the past few weeks, hundreds of activists of anti-LTTE political party , the Eelam Peoples Democratic Party (EPDP) stormed the Norwegian Embassy premises with the coffin of the latest LTTE victim, protesting against Norway for not playing their role as peace facilitators.
Velayadun Ravindran, a EPDP political member was shot by the LTTE on Wednesday and angry supporters carried the body of its slain politician to the Norwegian embassy in Colombo to stage a noisy demonstration against the Norwegian peace brokers.
The attack took place in the wake of a suicide attempt on the EPDP leader and Tamil Affairs Minister, Douglas Devananda a few days back.
Norway, which has facilitated five sessions of peace talks with the LTTE and the former United National Front Regime last year, faces heavy criticism for ignoring the LTTEs blatant ceasefire violations and its strategic elimination of those opposing the terror movement.
Heavily armed police guarding the embassy prevented protesters from going right into the diplomatic compound but the coffin was placed on the sidewalk outside the embassy walls.
Meanwhile, Deputy Norwegian Foreign Minister Vidar Helgessan is due in the country over the weekend to carry out discussions with both the government and the LTTE.
