Muttahida candidates declared successful

By Our Staff Reporter

ISLAMABAD, July 23: The Election Commission on Friday declared Muttahida Qaumi Movement candidates Mohammad Abid Ali Khan Umang and Nisar Ahmed Panhwar successful on two National Assembly seats, and Yousif Munir Shaikh on a Sindh Assembly seat.

The Sindh High Court, on a petition filed by the MQM, had on July 21 directed the commission to declare the results of the by-elections held on May 12 for NA-240, Karachi-II; NA-246, Karachi-VIII; and PS-127, Karachi-XXXIX.

The commission had cancelled the election results of the seats for irregularities and had ordered fresh by-elections on Aug 9. The decision was challenged by the MQM in the SHC, which stayed the holding of fresh by-elections.

On Friday, the commission declared Abid Umang elected on NA-240 with 46,453 votes out of 75,744 valid votes cast. Nisar Panhwar won the by-election for NA-246 with 47,685 votes out of 65,602 votes cast. Yousif Munir was elected from PS-127 having secured 41,117 votes out of 67,624 valid votes.
