KARACHI, July 21: As many as 300 houses in the 'A' category of North Karachi's Sector 11-A have been getting contaminated water for the past one month.

Occupants of the affected houses, A-200 to A-500, complained that although a large number of these houses were being supplied stinking water, the concerned KWSB officials had not yet bothered to rectify the fault responsible for the situation despite repeated complaints having been lodged with them.

Suspecting that sewage might have been seeping into the water lines of the locality, they urged the city nazim and managing director of the KWSB to direct the concerned officials to resolve the problem in order to avoid possible spread of water-borne diseases in the locality.

SHORTAGE: An acute shortage of water persists in various parts of the city. The worst affected among them included North Karachi's sectors 5D/1, 11-A, 11-B, 14-A and 14-B; Malir, Saudia Colony, Model Colony, Khokhrapar, parts of Lyari, Kharadar, Haqqani Chowk, Pakistan Chowk, parts of Clifton, Gulshan-i-Iqbal's blocks 2 and 4-A, Gulistan-i-Jauhar's blocks 13 and 10, Baldia, Orangi and Shershah.

Residents of the affected areas on Wednesday pointed out that in the absence of piped water, they had no choice but to either purchase private tankers's water at exorbitant rates or consume sub-soil unhygienic water at the cost of their health.

ILLEGAL CONNECTIONS: At least 50 houses in PECHS block 6, near 'E' Market, are not getting water for the past couple of months. Attributing the cause of their lingering water problem to illegal connections being provided to the commercial concerns in the area by some KWSB officials, local residents deplored that all their complaints in this regard had, so far, remained unheeded.

They alleged that on the one hand, residents of more than 50 houses around the 'E' Market often remained without water and, on the other, the trend of providing illegal connections to the commercial concerns was on the rise unabated.

The affected consumers have urged the city nazim and water board authorities to order an inquiry in this regard and issue directives to the concerned officials to resolve the water shortage problem at the earliest.
