MIRPURKHAS, July 18: Tail-end farmers of the Hiral Canal have complained of wrongful distribution of water in the Farash sub- division of the irrigation department. They said that water was being released into the canal for only a week each month which was causing damage to their crops.

In a joint statement issued here on Saturday, Irshad Siddiq and other farmers said that the executive engineer of the Thar division had announced a rotation plan, under which water was to be supplied to the canals in the Farash and Umerkot sub-divisions for 15 days every month.

They, however, deplored that the Umerkot sub-division was being supplied water for three weeks in a month and the Farash sub-division for only a week in a month.

WATER THEFT: Rangers personnel have intensified the patrolling of various watercourses of the Jamrao Canal to check water theft in the area. A Rangers team recently conducted a raid at the Degan Bhurgari distributary and found that 14 waterways of influential landlords had been tempered with.

The landowners included Kot Ghulam Mohammad Taluka Nazim Arif Khan Bhurgari and former chief engineer of the Ghulam Mohammad Memon irrigation department, Munir Ahmed. The team sealed off the distributary and warned landowners and growers alike to have the waterways restored immediately to the approved size.
