HYDERABAD: Workers' victimization alleged

By Bureau Report

HYDERABAD, July 18: Leaders of the Pakistan Wapda Hydro Electric Central Labour Union have condemned what they called victimization of employees by the Hesco management.

Speaking at a meeting of the Line Superintendents' Forum at the labour hall, Gari Khata, here on Saturday, they warned that a series of protest demonstrations would be held throughout the province if the harassment of the employees was not stopped and the company officials did not change their attitude.

Forum chairman Allahdin Kaimkhani told the meeting that show-cause notices had been issued to a number of line superintendents by the Hesco chief executive and the chief engineer under the Compulsory Retirement Ordinance, 2000, without any reason.

He said to cover their own corrupt practices, the officials had transferred the responsibility to feeder in charges of sub-divisions. Union president Abdul Latif Nizamani, who presided over the meeting, announced that the employees would not work for more than eight hours a day.

He demanded that the line superintendents should also be given cellular phone prepaid card facility of Rs1,000 per month like the officials. He alleged that officers of operation sub-divisions had appointed private persons in furtherance of their own designs.

Mr Nizamani said entry of these persons in the offices should be banned forthwith. He also criticized the role of contractors. He said the issuance of show-cause notices on flimsy grounds would not be tolerated.

The union president observed that 400 show-cause notices were lying on the table of the Hesco chief executive for his signatures. The others who spoke on the occasion included Iqbal Kaimkhani, Mohammad Azam Khan, Mir Khan Baloch, Malik Sultan and Qazi Saleem Anwar.

PROTEST: Residents of Thath Goraho, Naushahro Feroze, held a protest demonstration outside the press club here on Sunday against Mithiani Hesco lineman Ramzan Khokhar.

Talking to journalists, they said a youth, Abdul Jabbar Mashori, received serious burn injuries when he was made to climb an 11kv electricity pole by the lineman. They also accused the lineman providing illegal power connections to many consumers. They demanded immediate removal of the lineman and compensation to the injured.
