WANA, July 17: Three people were killed and six wounded in an exchange of fire between army troops and militants in the troubled South Waziristan tribal region on Friday night.
Local people said that a rocket hit the house of a tribesman, namely Peshawar Khan, in Tehsil Tiarza, about 30-kilometre north of Wana, which killed three labourers on the spot and wounded six others.
Firing started in the region near the Afghan border when militants fired rockets and missiles on Tiarza scouts camp in the Mahsud tribe area from different locations.
Army and paramilitary forces retaliated the attack and the exchange of firing continued for more than three hours.
A rocket hit the under-construction house of Peshawar Khan, killing three labourers. Two of the victims and the injured belonged to Dera Ismail Khan, while the third victim, Daulat Khan, was a local resident.
Sources said that the tribal elders had initiated hectic efforts to force two of the six wanted militants to surrender to the administration.
A jirga of the Ahmadzai Wazir tribe has been convened in Wana, the regional headquarters, on Sunday to discuss the future line of action as two wanted militants Maulvi Abbas and Mohammad Javed refused to give themselves up.
The government has already invoked clause 21 of the 1901 Frontier Crimes Regulation to force the Ahmadzai Wazir tribe to produce the wanted militants and expel foreign militants from the area.
