Indian legend Gavaskar under investigation

MUMBAI, July 16: Former Indian cricket captain Sunil Gavaskar is under investigation over alleged offences relating to his involvement with a shoe company.

Police in western state of Gujarat have filed a case against six men, including Gavaskar, accusing them of breach of trust and cheating.

Gavaskar who scored 10,122 runs in 125 Tests for India between 1971 and 1987, is currently in Sri Lanka where he is working as a commentator on the Asia Cup. He also has an important administrative role in the game as chairman of International Cricket Council's Cricket Committee, which is responsible for all playing issues.

A police spokesman was quoted as saying the case related to a 1992 share issue by the shoe company intended to raise more than U$500,000. He said Gavaskar would be asked to make himself available for questioning in the near future. They have also asked to see the company's financial records. -PPI
