HYDERABAD, July 16: Members of various union councils, who were on hunger strike outside the press club here against non-payment of honorarium, called off their protest on Thursday at the intervention of District Nazim Dr Makhdoom Rafiquzzaman.

The nazim visited the hunger strike camp and urged the protesting councillors to adopt resolutions in their budget sessions for grant of monthly honorarium of Rs1,500 each to councillors and send copies of the resolutions to the Sindh government and the National Reconstruction Bureau.

He promised to support their case. He said Rs3,000 each had been allocated in the district council budget for minority, labour and women councillors. The nazim announced that he would convene a meeting of councillors of the district after the rain emergency was over.

HUNGER STRIKE: Activists of the Asif Ali Zardari Release Committee, Latifabad taluka, marched from the SP Chowk to the press club where they observed a hunger strike. They raised slogans for release of Mr Zardari.

Speaking on the occasion, Khair Mohammad Mirani, Jehanzeb Gujjar and others said Mr Zardari was languishing in jail for eight years without any trial. They demanded withdrawal of false cases against him and Benazir Bhutto.

FAKE COSMETICS: The City police on Thursday raided a house in Resham Gali and arrested two persons, Mohammad Zakir and Mohammad Rashid. A huge quantity of fake cosmetics, Gutka and Mainpuri was recovered from the house. The raid was conducted on a complaint of representatives of some cosmetic companies.
