ISLAMABAD, July 15: National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Chairman Lt-Gen Munir Hafiez on Thursday presented a cheque for Rs18.66 million to Pakistan Railways (PR) chairman on account of recovery made by the bureau from Rawalpindi Railways Employees Cooperative Housing Society.
The bureau recovered this amount from the society on account of outstanding payments of transfer fees, annual ground rent and office rent, an official of NAB said. NAB had received a complaint about certain irregularities and embezzlement in the affairs of the society.
During investigation process, it was found that some officials of the Pakistan Railways and administrators of the cooperative department had evaded transfer fees, annual ground rent and office rent of certain properties.
The administrators of the cooperatives department confessed the crime and deposited the money (Rs18.66 million) with NAB. Investigations are also being conducted into other alleged irregularities in the society relating to double allotment, encroachment of railways' land and excessive expenditures on development works amounting to Rs500 million, the official added.
