Provinces given over Rs11bn in five years: Emergency relief

ISLAMABAD, July 14: The emergency relief cell of the Cabinet Division provided a sum of Rs2,235.750 million to Punjab, Rs3,915.768 million to Sindh, Rs3,846.181 million to Balochistan and Rs1,102 million to NWFP during the last five years.
The cell also provided relief assistance to Afghanistan, Turkey, Iraq, Kosovo, India, Iran, Sri Lanka, China, Algeria and Chechnia during the period. In a briefing to the Senate standing committee on cabinet on Tuesday, secretary cabinet Ejaz Rahim said the National Language Authority translated 53,000 pages of official documents, including government rules and regulations.
It also prepared and published 550 titles, including 80 dictionaries and as many textbooks, to facilitate introduction of Urdu in offices, educational institutions and courts.
Regarding the performance of National Achieves of Pakistan, the committee was informed that 3,000 rare photographs and 1,366 files having national and historic significance had been preserved which included Fatima Jinnah Papers and All-India Muslim League Papers.
Senator Dr Shahzad Waseem, the chairman of the committee, said the record relating to the Father of the Nation be preserved at a single place so as to enable scholars to have a knowledge of our historical perspective.
The committee was informed that the Printing Corporation of Pakistan presses at Karachi and Lahore would be privatized in accordance with the cabinet decision and that the press at Islamabad would be used for classified work.
The committee, while reviewing the performance of the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority, suggested that public transport should be converted into CNG. This would not only help overcome economic constraints but would also create a friendly environment. The committee was also briefed on the activities of Nepra. The meeting was of the view that steps should be taken to protect consumer rights.
