KARACHI: Court issues notices to govt on lawyer's disappearance

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, July 14: The Sindh High Court on Wednesday issued notices to the federal and provincial attorneys in the alleged detention of another city lawyer for July 16.

According to petitioner, Khalida Khanum and her counsel, Khurram Maqsood, advocate Shamsher Khan was picked up from his Gulshan-i-Iqbal residence on the night between July 12 and 13.

Advocate Khan, the counsel said, was the convener of the Mohajir Qaumi Movement legal aid committee and was representing the movement's leaders and activists in many cases. The petitioner apprehended that the advocate had been taken into custody by the Gulshan-i-Iqbal police and was being detained by them.

Citing the police, the home secretary, and the provincial and federal governments as respondents, the petitioner sought the advocate's production in the court. Justices Anwar Zaheer Jamali and Gulzar Ahmed, who constituted the division bench that heard the petition, issued notices to the federal and provincial attorneys and asked the advocate-general to ascertain the missing advocate's whereabouts.
