ISLAMABAD, July 13: The Pakistan International Airlines Corporation (PIAC) appointed 4,553 people, mostly on contract basis, between October 1, 1999 to May 31, 2004, shows a ministry of defence document available to Dawn.
The document, containing the names of all those appointed during the above-mentioned period with details of domicile, pay groups and date of appointments, showed that a majority of 4,522 persons (99.32 per cent) had been appointed on contract basis and only 31 regular appointments were made.
According to the document, out of 31 people appointed on regular basis, 13 belong to the Punjab, six belong Sindh (urban), four belong to Sindh (rural), seven belong to NWFP and one belong to Azad Kashmir. No one from Balochistan and Northern Areas had been appointed on regular basis.
Similarly, among 4,522 contractual employees, a majority of 3,828 are those, who have been working in PIA through manpower contractor and later inducted into PIA with staff number.
Out of 4,522 contractual employees, 1,876 belong to the Punjab, Urban Sindh (1,585), Rural Sindh (268), NWFP (545), Balochistan (81), AJK (73) and Northern Areas/FATA (64).
It shows that as many as 3,918 persons were recruited in the airlines during 2003 followed by 324 in the year 2001 and 173 in 2004. The list also shows that there are 16 people, who have been working in the PIA on deputation.
It may be mentioned that in the previous session of the Senate, PPP Senator Enver Baig had alleged that Defence Minister Rao Sikandar Iqbal had appointed his son-in-law Maj Khurram Mushtaq in PIA in group 9.
The list, available with Dawn contains the name of Khurram Mushtaq with the designation of manager marketing in group IX, working on deputation, but there was no mention of his being an army official.
Those working on deputation with date of appointment are Flight-Lieutenant Usman Shari (September 28, 2001); Group Captain S S A Hash (October 18, 2001); Maj Naseer Ahmed (March 28, 2002), AVM Jawed Iqbal (August 1, 2003), Hamid Nawaz (October 15, 2001); Maj (retired) H M Malik (February 18, 2000); Mohammad Adnan (October 15, 2001); S Atiqul Qadri (October 15, 2001); S Zahid Hussain (October 15, 2001), Sher Alam Khan (October 15, 2001); Abdul Razzaque (October 16, 2001); Ejaz Hussain October 16, 2001); Abdul Ghaffar (October 24, 2001); Khurram Mushtaq (March 25, 2004); Atifa Riffat (April 6, 2004) and Samina Pervez (May 4, 2004).
