KARACHI: CBs merger with city govt sought

KARACHI, July 12: "Extension of Cantonment Boards be stopped immediately and they be merged in the City District Government Karachi.

This was demanded by the Lawyers Committee for Human Rights Pakistan (LCHRP) in a unanimously adopted resolution at its meeting here on Monday. The meeting was presided over the LCHRP chief Aqil Lodhi.

The meeting observed that there were seven CBs functioning in the city under different administrators. The lands under the control of these CBs belonged to the state or the Board of Revenue but, it alleged, were grabbed by the CBs.

The LCHRP maintained that people were facing problems because of property tax and parking fee charged by the Cantonment Boards. Despite collecting revenues, it said, the CBs were providing inadequate facilities in their respective areas.

In another resolution, the meeting said that instead of establishing the 'Askari Park' at the site of the old Subzimandi, 'Askari Hospital' be built there to provide health facilities to citizens. -PPI
