LAHORE, July 2: Pakistan cricket team's new coach Bob Woolmer, had introductory meetings with the skipper and the team management including the doctor, trainer and the manager after arriving on Friday from London to join the training camp.
The camp is in progress to pick Pakistan team for the Asia Cup to be held from July 16. Woolmer also took skipper Inzamamul Haq into confidence over his decision to call pace man Shoaib Akhtar for the camp.
"Shoaib is reaching Lahore on Saturday and will join the camp from Sunday", camp commandant Haroon Rasheed told Dawn when asked to confirm his arrival. Shoaib was included in the list of 26 probables called for the camp, but he, due to his engagements with Durham, did not join the camp despite the last Thursday's deadline set by the team management and the selectors.
Woolmer, who met Shoaib and later PCB chairman Shaharyar M. Khan and chief executive Ramiz Raja in England convinced both about the importance of inclusion of the world's fastest bowler for the Asia Cup.
Shoaib's integrity was thrown into question after PCB set up a medical commission to determine whether his injury in the third Test against India in Rawalpindi was genuine.
The commission had declared his injury as genuine. Shoaib, had decided to sue the board for challenging his integrity, but later changed his mind. However, he showed his resentment by not joining the camp.
Inzamam, who has developed differences with Shoaib during the series against India, had said that he would be satisfied about Shoaib's fitness before including him into the team.
Inzamam had to be convinced because he had no other option after the PCB's bosses had endorsed the decision of the coach. Meanwhile, medium-pacer Umar Gul went through a bone test on Friday. The test was conducted at a local hospital on the advice of new foreign trainer Murray Stevenson.
Umar has been suffering from back pain during the second Test against India at Lahore. The result of his bone test will be known on Saturday.
In another development, three more cricketers Mohammad Sami, Danish Kaneria and Yasir Arfat underwent the fitness level test conducted by Stevenson.
The fitness level test of other 22 probables was conducted on Wednesday.
