By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, July 1: The syndicate of the University of Karachi will consider budgetary proposals of the varsity for the financial year 2004-05 in its next meeting likely to be held in the mid of July, said a senior official on the campus.

After the chancellor - also governor Sindh - nominated five persons to the syndicate, the university was in a position to hold a meeting of syndicate, the official added, saying now there were 12 valid members, including ex-officio members. The body's meeting quorum requirement was presence of at least nine members.

The official said the syndicate, which was waiting for nominations by the university's chancellor on seven posts, virtually ceased to exist from June 1 when four members elected from the teachers' constituency completed their sanctioned tenures of three years.

As per a varsity notification, the chancellor nominated the following members for a period of three years, with immediate effect, under various categories:

Persons of eminence - Dr Farman Fatehpuri, Dr M Fahimuddin, Dr Kauser Ali Syed; Woman - Barrister Shahida Jamil; Alim - Maulana Irshad-ul-Haq Thanvi.

Nominations on college principal and KU dean posts by the chancellor are expected to be received soon, the official said.

To a question, the official said that elections of teachers from the constituencies of lecturers, assistant teachers, associate teachers and professors would be held after commencement of new semester. At present the university is observing a semester break till July 12.
