KASUR, July 1: A constable died while three officials, including a sub-inspector, suffered injuries on Thursday in an 'encounter' at Kot Chunian village.

Police said Chunian SI Niamat Ali along with two constables Ghulam Mustafa and Jalal Din were returning from the Noorpur Jattan picket by a private car.

Near Mear Kot 15/16, some armed men intercepted the policemen, beat them up and snatched their weapons, cash and wrist watches. The dacoits opened fire on them on resistance.

Meanwhile, a police patrolling squad of Chunian came there and stopped the gangsters who opened fire on it, killing constable Mukhtar Ahmad on the spot. After a brief encounter, the outlaws managed their escape.

His funeral prayers, offered at the district police lines, were attended by provincial minister for management and professional development Sardar Hassan Akhtar Mokal, district and sessions judge, DCO Hashim Tareen, DPO Mian Ghulam Muhammad Kalyar, ASP Shahzad Aslam and others.

The police department announced Rs500,000 compensation for the constable's family. The Kasur DPO also announced to give one-day salary of all police officials to the widow.

INJURED: Four robbers shot at and injured three people on resistance at Marali Sadar village here on Thursday. Near the village, the gangsters tried to take away a motorcycle from Liaquat Ali, Ali Raza and Shehzad and opened fire on them when they put up resistance. Police have registered a case.
