QUETTA, July 1: A development package of Rs 500 million has been included in the next financial year's Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) for the development and beautification of Quetta.
This was disclosed by the Additional Chief Secretary Planning and Development Nadir Ali while speaking at the PSDP briefing here on Thursday. He said that said that a number of development projects would be implemented in Quetta under the development package.
He said that in addition to this amount another Rs 10 million would be spent on overall cleaning and sanitation of the city while another amount of Rs 10 million would be provided for installing street lights.
He said that in all government high schools of the city, computer classes with necessary equipment would be introduced from the new year to facilitate the students, a majority of whom could not afford to pay the heavy fees of the private institutions.
Besides, he said the College of Home Economics, College of Arts, Girls High School and a Girls College at Brewery Road would also be launched during 2004-05. Referring to the achievements during the year ending June 30, he said in the road sector alone 1,300 kilometres were black-topped of which 1,082 km was under the PSDP and another 210 km under Drought Rehabilitation programmes.
Previously no more than 200 to 300 kilometres of roads were metalled in a year. He hoped that all towns and villages in the province would be linked with metalled roads within the next four to five years.
He further said that an over-head bridge would be constructed over Chaman Railway crossing in the city at a cost of Rs 280 million which will facilitate commuters to and from Women University, Bolan Medical College complex, and various residential settlements along Brewery Road.
The ACS informed that funds have been allocated for collective marriages under the auspices of the Social Welfare Department and the first such function would be arranged very soon at the recently constructed Officers Club building.
