KARACHI, June 29: The police on Tuesday claimed that they had started a hunt for the arrest of Dr Akmal Waheed and Dr Arshad Waheed, for their alleged complicity with members of the newly surfaced jihadi outfit, 'Jundullah' in terrorist activities.

According to an unsigned press release, issued by the office of a senior police official, the police had gathered evidence against the two doctors. It said the arrested ring-leader of Jundullah, Ataur Rehman named the two doctors for providing medical aid to members of the said jihadi group.

Besides, Shehzad Bajwa, another active member of Jundullah, had also named the two doctors for extending assistance to their group, the statement claimed. The statement said involvement of the two doctors in sending some members of Jundullah to Wana for terrorist training had also been established, and police had been conducting raids to arrest the two doctors, who are brothers.

However, the two brothers, Dr Akmal Waheed, a cardiologist at NICVD and Dr Arshad Waheed, an orthopaedic surgeon at the JPMC, went missing while on their way home on June 17.

Their car was found abandoned within Jackson police limits. Later, after their family received a ransom call demanding Rs10 million for their release, an FIR was registered about kidnapping for ransom against unknown people.

Meanwhile, the Staff Action Committee of the JPMC, tied black bands on their arms to protest against kidnapping of the two doctors and demanded their recovery. The committee apprised the JPMC administration that the protest would remain peaceful, and that a token strike would be observed at the OPD on Thursday.

The committee decided to tie black bands as a mark of protest till whereabouts of the two doctors were ascertained. The action committee warned the government to resolve the issue of missing doctors, otherwise the protest would spread across the city.
