Mahmood-IV falter

KARACHI, June 26: Eastern Federal Union (EFU) moved up in round robin league matches of Karachi Cup with an impressive win against Mahmood-IV in the second round tie on Friday.

EFU comprising Hasan Sajjad-A.K. Bhurgri, Shoaib and Mazhar Ali Khan gave expert treatment to the tricky boards to win on easy terms.

After having established a lead of 22 International Match Points (IMP) at the breather due to an over-ambitious game try Mahmood-IV on board one, four Heart were duly penalized, then they missed a slam in Diamonds on Board 11.

Board four was another part game swing when EFU pair made 2H.

Mahmood-IV's only swing was 3NT and contract which was missed by EFU pair.

In the second half, Rahimullah-Mahmood Naqvi earned two nerve shattering swings when five Hearts was beaten three tricks for 800 and they stopped below slam on Board 21.

However EFU's both pair then put up spirited fight and on Board 17, they have beaten Four Spades by a brilliant defence, gaining 10 IMP, then on Board 22, they made another Heart Game, on Board 27 when Mahmood-IV pair played as low as one Spades, Hasan Sajjad-Bhurgri reached a lay-down slams in the clubs and on very next board they bid a slam in No Trump to gin another 26 IMP on two boards. EFU won 54 IMP, thus adding 25-5 in their overnight score.

Though no top seeded teams have so far played any match, but in Allana House, Four Bidders (N), has defeated Saigols 18-12 while Karachi Club (Akber) had the better of Aces 20-10 VP.

In the Hadi House, Candyland (K) had defeated Four Bidders Club 25-5, Havoc outpaced Mahmood-IV 25-3 in Candyland (M) House, EFU and Mushahid have played draw in the Marathon House, two matches were decided between Giants versus Syed-IV 25-2 and Chandna Versus KC Reza 25-4 VP.

Overall 32 teams are taking part in the Karachi Cup.-APP
