Military helped LTTE rebel, says minister

By Our Correspondent

COLOMBO. June 26: The government media spokesperson and media minister, Mangala Samaraweera, said on Friday that certain elements in the military had helped the renegade LTTE eastern region commander, Karuna.

"We cannot deny that the military was involved in aiding the dissident militant leader Karuna," Samaraweera told journalists.

Hours after the statement, deputy defence minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayayake denied the army was involved in providing any assistance to the dissident LTTE leader.

The contradiction surfaced soon after a Muslim United National Front member of parliament, Ali Zahir Moulana, admitted that he had helped the LTTE leader reach Colombo.
