KARACHI: Bone diseases among local women

KARACHI, June 23: An early onset of varied bone diseases is being noticed among local women at a comparatively young age due to a sedentary lifestyle and detrimental diet pattern - high in caloric content but low in calcium and folic acid.

Surgeon Rehana Shah, the country's only woman orthopaedic surgeon talking to APP on Wednesday said besides congenital problems local women are being noticed to be afflicted with conditions which till a few years back were rare and are still largely preventable.

In this context, she regretted that the growing trend among women to avoid milk and curd besides green leafy vegetables and exposure to sunlight, a natural source of Vitamin- D and above all to involve themselves in activities requiring physical exertion is ultimately leading them to frequent complaints of backache, joint pain, cervical pain and so forth which at times may seriously hamper their mobility.

It was highlighted that Diabetes, Obesity and Calcium Deficiency in any woman can lead to serious consequences including early instances of a condition where Knee Replacement Therapy is required at comparatively young age. The surgeon stressed that these could be efficiently contained through due care towards healthy eating habits and active living style.

Referring to certain congenital problems to which young girls are often exposed to and are also compelled to suffer due to lack of early care on part of their parents or guardians, she cited " Scoliosis" (internal spinal curvature) - one of the conditions noticed among girls aged between 12 to 18 years.

According to her the condition which is inborn but becomes evident at age of 12 years or so must not be ignored and noticing any girl child to be growing with "S" shape spinal cord must be immediately referred to an orthopaedic physician or surgeon.
