Aqeel beaten in semifinal by India's Vishal


ISLAMABAD, June 22: Pakistan No.1 and Davis Cupper Aqeel Khan advanced into the pre-quarterfinals beating Panja Saurav (India) in straight sets 6-3, 6-1 in the third leg of Indian Satellite Circuit at New Delhi on Tuesday.

Aqeel was seeded eighth in the third leg due to his outstanding performance in the previous two legs. He lost in the pre-quarterfinal in the first leg against British player 7-6, 7-6.

In the second leg he qualified for the semifinals and lost to seeded Indian player Upper Vishal in a well-contested two set match 7-6(6), 7-6(6) but still managed to qualify for the master event which consists of top 24 players in the tournament. The event will be held at New Delhi next week.

Another upcoming junior Pakistani player Shahzad Khan lost in the second leg in pre-quarterfinals, qualified for the third leg and will face Yu Hiu Tung of Hong Kong in the first round.

SECOND WEEK RESULTS:

First round: Aqeel Khan bt Panja Saurav (India) 6-2, 7-5.

Pre-quarterfinal: Aqeel Khan bt Khannan Vijay (India) 7-6(4),1-0 Ret.

Quarterfinal: Aqeel Khan bt Hutchins Ross (British) 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-4.

Semifinal: Uppal Vishal (India) bt Aqeel Khan 7-6(6),7-6(6).

First round: Shahzad Khan bt Roger (Spain) 6-1, 7-6(3).

Pre-quarterfinal: Kunnap Mait (Est) bt Shahzad 6-4,6-4.

THIRD WEEK RESULTS:

First round: Aqeel Khan bt Panja Saurav (India) 6-3, 6-1. -APP
