HARIPUR: Attack on NGO workers condemned

By Our Correspondent

HARIPUR, June 22: The district-based Ittehad of Non-Governmental Organizations has condemned the attack on the two workers of Khowendo Kor, a Peshawar-based NGO , and termed it a conspiracy to hinder the activities of the NGOs, which were working in the remote areas of the province for their development.

The attack left a lady coordinator and her driver injured in Bannu district the other day. The meeting, held at Sungi office here with Omar Javed in the chair, was participated by the representatives of the Sarhad Rural Support Programme, Rural Development Project, Save the Children, Women Resource Centre and various community-based organizations.

The participants said the attack on the NGO workers was aimed at discouraging the non-governmental organizations through such tactics, which would resultantly sabotage the development process being carried out by the NGOs and their volunteers in the remote areas of the province.

They said it was not merely an assault on the workers of an NGO but on the rights of the people, who had remained deprived of their basic facilities for years.

Terming it a terrorists' attack, the Ittehad of NGOs demanded of the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal government to ensure protection of life and property to the NGO workers and take to task all those involved in the firing incident so that the NGOs could carry out their activities in the project areas peacefully.
