KARACHI: Progress on development schemes reviewed

KARACHI, June 22: The redesigning work at Nazimabad Petrol Pump roundabout, being carried out to reduce traffic pressure at that spot, was inspected by the District Coordination Officer, Mir Hussain Ali, on Tuesday.

City nazim's representative Abid Ilyas, Works EDO Shoaib Siddiqi, engineers concerned and other officials were also present on the occasion. The DCO was informed that the roundabout was being reduced by 18 feet, while all service roads around the roundabout were being closed and replaced with alternate access roads to make traffic movement safe and smooth.

Under the plan, the service road leading from the petrol pump to Nazimabad is being widened and a 220-feet-wide cover is being laid on the drain. The DCO directed the officials concerned to speed up the pace of work to ensure timely completion of the project.

He also visited the Nazimabad Sindh Government Dispensary and the Liaquatabad Town TB Clinic and took notice of the absence of some of the clinics' staff and ordered disciplinary action against them.

He also went round various sections of the clinics, checked availability of medicines, sanitary conditions and attendance registers. At Nazimabad dispensary, the absentees included Dr Firdaus Alam, Dr Shafqat Mirza and other staff members, while at Liaqatabad clinic Dr Tariq Jamil was found absent.

Meanwhile, the DCO issued directive to Health EDO to take steps for administrative improvements in these dispensaries so as to make these facilities useful for the people.

Meanwhile, the city government's transport department has prepared various short and long-term alternative proposals to reduce traffic pressure at seven major roundabouts in Saddar and its surroundings.

In this regard, the transport department on Monday gave a detailed briefing on these proposals to DCO Mir Hussain Ali. It was informed that the department had planned to make alternative arrangements to ease traffic flow at the junctions at Saddar Dawakhana, Jehangir Park, Fresco, Eidgah, Tibet Centre, Fleet Club and Sarwar Shaheed Road.

In this regard some of the roads will be declared one-way. Transport EDO Dr Tahir Soomro recommended that entry of buses operating without route permits into Saddar area be checked through enforcement of rules. - APP
