Ireland humiliate Windies

BELFAST, June 18: Minnows Ireland humiliated West Indies by six wickets on Thursday. Back in 1969 Ireland famously bowled out a West Indies side featuring Clive Lloyd for just 25 on their way to a nine-wicket win at Sion Mills.

But Thursday's result was almost as impressive after Lara's men had begun their tour of England with a 96-run one-day win against the same opponents on Wednesday.

For Ireland it was the latest in a string of recent triumphs which saw Zimbabwe defeated by 10 wickets last year and English county giants Surrey beaten by five wickets in the C and G Trophy, the premier domestic one-day knockout cup, earlier this season.

Dwayne Bravo's unbeaten century of exactly 100 guided the West Indies, warming up for the triangular one-day series with England and New Zealand starting later this month, to 292 for seven from their 50 overs. Ireland though ultimately coasted home to win with 19 balls to spare.

Summarized scores:

West Indies 292-7 (D. Bravo 100 no)

Ireland 295-4 (J Bray 71, J Molins 66, N O'Brien 58 no). - AFP
