FAISALABAD, June 18: The concrete and makeshift encroachments were razed during an operation launched by the National Logistic Cell and the Tehsil Municipal Administration (City) in Tata Bazaar here on Friday.

Special teams of the TMA and NLC accompanied by a heavy police contingent reached Tata Bazaar early in the morning and started bulldozing the encroachments from the main road.

Some of the shopkeepers offered resistance but due to the intervention of police and some NLC officials the matter was resolved amicably. However, the effected people raised slogans against the tehsil and district government. They alleged that they were being victimized just to cast votes in favour of the anti-government candidates in the last general election.

Union Council Nazim Sharafat Ali Khan said the area road strip had become unmotorable due to its poor condition and huge funds had been approved for its construction by the TMA.

He said the contract to construct the road and its footpaths had been allocated to the NLC and removing of encroachments was made mandatory as per approved plan of the road rehabilitation. TMA officials told Dawn that traders and their representatives had been taken into confidence before the clean up operation.
