RAWALPINDI: LHCBA against plan to set up military courts

RAWALPINDI, June 17: The Lahore High Court Bar Association here on Thursday pledged that it would resist the setting up of military courts.
In a meeting, which was presided over by the bar president, Malik Mohammad Nawaz, the participants opposed the proposed plan regarding setting up of military courts in Karachi to expedite trials in terrorism cases and termed it against the honour of independent judiciary.
In a resolution, the lawyers said they would include the anti-military courts stance in their ongoing campaign for the revival of the 1973 Constitution, besides All Pakistan Lawyers Association would also include the new issue in its agenda during its upcoming meeting.
They termed the move as unconstitutional and against the fundamental rights of the people. They also condemned the ongoing military operation in Wana and asked the military to go back to barracks and stop interfering in the affairs of the state. Meanwhile, the District Bar Association (DBA) also held a meeting and condemned the plan of establishing military courts.
