EASTBOURNE, June 16: Top seed Amelie Mauresmo handed out a hard-hitting tennis education to British university graduate and world ranked 240 Amanda Janes, winning 6-4, 6-2 in the second round of the US$656,000 Eastbourne Championships on Wednesday.

Mauresmo, who has been seeded fourth for Wimbledon, wasted little time in fine-tuning her game on grass after a delayed start this week due to a bye at Devonshire Park.

Janes, the 26-year-old daughter of 1961 Wimbledon runner-up Christine Truman, had little to offer in a thrashing which lasted less than an hour. The Briton lost serve three times against the French seed, but matched Mauresmo with six aces.

Russian second seed Svetlana Kusnetsova earned a 6-3, 6-4 victory on a blustery afternoon stopping Maria Vento of Venezuela to reach the quarter-finals of the prime Wimbledon tune-up tournament.

Mauresmo, a Wimbledon semi-finalist two years ago, faced few threats from her local opponent Janes, the first Briton to win a match here since 1998. Mauresmo will now face eighth seed Magdalena Maleeva, who recovered from a set and 5-1 down to oust 1994 Wimbledon champion Conchita Martinez of Spain 3-6, 7-5, 6-4.

The Bulgarian trailed 3-0 in the final set but won six of the last seven games to take the victory. Comeback-bound Daniela Hantuchova registered her first successive victories in four months as she fought past Croatian Karolina Sprem 6-3, 2-6, 6-4.
