PML-Q lawyers call off strike

By Our Correspondent

GUJRAT, June 16: Over hundred PML-Q lawyers have decided to call off their strike against DPO Raja Munawar Hussain and will resume courts from Thursday (today). District Nazim Chaudhry Shafaat Hussain convened a meeting of PML-Q workers, lawyers, Nazims, Naib Nazims and councillors on Wednesday at Zahoor Palace to get their opinion over the strike issue.

A number of politicians opined that DPO Raja Munawar was a competent officer and had played a major role in declining the crime graph in the district besides killing most of proclaimed offenders in encounters during his posting here.

They said the government did not succumb to the pressure of lawyers especially bar president Tariq Javed who had politicized the issue. They said the DPO should not be transferred.

Former bar president Malik Iftikhar suggested that lawyers affiliated with the party should end their strike in the larger public interest as they were the main sufferers.

Sources quoted former Gujrat MC chairman Chaudhry Tufail as saying to participants of the meeting that bar secretary-general Raja Rasheed Jaral, a union council Nazim of PPP, had approached the former and agreed to join the PML-Q if cases against him were ended.

He said that he had turned down his request and advised him to join the party without any condition, they further quoted him as saying. Meanwhile, Raja Rasheed Jaral was not available for comments. After getting the suggestions from participants, District Nazim Chaudhry Shafaat said in his address that the DPO would not be transferred from here.

He appreciated the lawyer's decision of resuming their work in public interest and asked them to gather at Zila Council on Thursday from where they would restart their work. Tehsil Nazim Chaudhry Saadat Nawaz Ajnala and Kharian tehsil member Chaudhry Asif Dhama also spoke on the occasion.

ARRESTED: Lalamusa City and Sadar police claimed on Wednesday to have arrested five drug pushers, including a couple. DSP (Headquarters) Mahmoodul Hasan Qureshi told Dawn that the City police party led by SHO Chaudhry Anwar had conducted a raid and arrested Azim Masih, Abdul Sattar alias Tara Malik and Naeem Masih.

The police recovered 26 bottles of liquor and 500 grams of hashish from them. He said the Sadar police party led by SHO Arif Gondal arrested Khizar Hayat and his wife Bushra from Theekarian and recovered 200 grams of hashish and 235 grams of heroin.
