GUJRANWALA, June 16: Three dangerous prisoners, involved in murder and dacoity cases, escaped from a police van after breaking its window with the alleged connivance of an inspector in the district courts here on Wednesday.

Prisoners - Asif of Aulakh Bhaiki, Naushera Virkan; Iftikhar Ahmad of Sianwala Sadar and Faisal of Bhatti Bhango were brought to district courts by inspector Talib Hussain and other constables. After producing them before court, the inspector had the prisoners got on police van and locked its door.

The inspector deployed constable Ashiq Hussain at the main gate of the judicial lock-up in the district courts instead of directing him to guard the police van. Taking an opportunity, the accused smashed the window of the van and escaped in a four-wheeler which was already parked there.

On receiving information, DPO Saud Aziz, SP (Headquarters) Waqar Ahmad Chohan, DSP (Headquarters) Syed Noor Hussain Shah and other officers hastened to the spot. They had inspector Talib Hussain handcuffed and sent him to jail after registering a case against him.

The DPO constituted raiding teams for the arrest of the fleeing accused. However, no accused could be arrested till the filing of this report. Further investigation is under way.

LAUNCHED: The City Tehsil Council launched an operation against the rundown buildings and razed half a dozen shops and houses here on Wednesday. City Nazim Babu Javed Ahmad had directed the tehsil municipal administration to demolish the rundown buildings after issuing notices to their owners.

The TMA had issued the notices to owners of buildings some two weeks ago, but they failed to follow the directive. The dilapidated buildings were razed on the GT Road behind the Government Iqbal High School, Gill Road, Ghor Door Road and other areas. A spokesman of the city tehsil council said that the operation against the dilapidated buildings would continue.
