LAHORE, June 16: The newly established University of Gujrat (UoG) has acquired 1,000 kanals of land on lease from the Punjab Auqaf Department and is in the process of finalizing its design and PC-I.

This was stated by UoG vice-chancellor Prof Dr Imtiaz Ahmad Cheema during a presentation on the university chaired by Punjab Education Minister Imran Masood on Wednesday. Prof Cheema told the meeting that the university had finalized its monograms and prospectus. He demanded that the university should be given Rs100 million as seed money.

He said four colleges in Gujrat -- the Government College, Government Degree College for Women, Railway Road, the Fatima Jinnah College for Women and the Government Degree College for Women, Marghzar Colony -- had been declared university's constituent institutions.

He said a number of local private colleges had applied for affiliation with the university. He said the university had planned to launch two or three new courses at its constituent colleges this year while regular classes would start from Sept 2005.

Speaking on the occasion, the minister said the problems being faced by the newly-established universities in the public sector would be resolved on an emergency basis to ensure their smooth functioning.
