UK authorities investigate planes' fires

By Baqir Sajjad Syed

RAWALPINDI, June 13: The United Kingdom's transport department is investigating three incidents of fire involving the Pakistan International Airline's newly inducted Boeing 777 jets at the Manchester Airport.

Sources said the air accident investigation branch of the department was initially questioning the airline's officials and pilots of the three aircraft involved in the incidents.

PIA spokesperson Sameena Pervez, when contacted, confirmed that the investigations were being done. She claimed that PIA authorities had requested the investigations.

She said the PIA was also independently looking into the matter. The sources said in all the three incidents fire broke out in the same part of the aeroplanes - the undercarriage - after the planes had landed at the Manchester Airport. Of the incidents, two occurred within 24 hours of each other.
