ISLAMABAD, June 10: The Election Commission of Pakistan on Thursday contradicted claims that it had delivered its judgment of declaring Karachi by-elections as null and void in haste.
Khalid Aziz, the EC's Director Public Relations, while referring perhaps to the press conference of MQM leaders in which the judgment was assailed, has clarified that the notes of the inquiry proceedings were taken and dictation given on each hearing, which had taken place on May 20, May 27, June 2 and June 9, 2004.
A section of the press had published a news item stating that the judgment in which the elections results of by-elections in Karachi constituencies like NA-240, NA-246 and PS-127 were declared null and void was delivered rather hurriedly.
Khalid Aziz said in a statement that on June 9, the last date of hearing, the Additional Advocate General Sindh had argued the case at length for half an hour and discussed every aspect of the case at the conclusion of the hearing.
He said the judgment was reserved at 10am and a 40-page order was delivered at 3pm in which every aspect of the case was dealt with in accordance with law, which was quite in consonance with the usual practice.
