LAHORE, June 6: At least seven people, three of them from one family, were killed and dozens others suffered injuries when a storm accompanied by heavy rain lashed the city on Sunday night.

A hangar at the Old Lahore Airport collapsed, causing 'serious damage' to at least two small planes. One of the aircraft, owned by the Punjab administration, was meant for VIP movement. However, a Punjab government spokesman did not confirm it, saying he had not yet received the report.

Police said three women were killed when a wall of their house collapsed in Ghaziabad. They were identified as Farzana, 24, her suckling daughter Rabia and a cousin, Afshan, 14.

Cantonment SP Dr Usman Anwar said two more people of another family were killed in Baghbanpura when the roof of their house caved in. Their names could not be ascertained.

A motorcyclist, Mohammad Arif, was killed when a tree fell on him on the Lower Mall and another man, Mohammad Ismail, died when the roof of his house collapsed in Shahdara, said city division SP Rao Abdul Karim.

He said there was a possibility of more causalities in house collapse incidents and felling of tress. "We are constantly receiving reports and our men are responding for first-aid and rescue operations," Rao Karim said.

Dozens of wounded people, including women and children, were brought to various city hospitals, mainly the Mayo, the Services, the Lahore General Hospital and the Jinnah Hospital, till the filing of this report at midnight.

The police and civic agencies were busy in rescue operations at various parts of the city till filing of this report in the wee hours of Monday. "We are right now busy in getting the roads cleared from the wreckage the storm had left in the shape of uprooted trees, hoardings and many other things," the Cantonment SP told Dawn on phone.
