BD ruling party loses by-poll

DHAKA, June 6: The son of former Bangladeshi president Badruddoza Chowdhury on Sunday defeated the ruling alliance candidate in a high-profile parliamentary by-election, television reports said.

The ballot in Munshiganj was closely followed as both father and son formerly belonged to the ruling alliance. Mahi B. Chowdhury won back the seat he had lost after defecting to his father's Bangladesh Bikalpa Dhara party from the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in March.

He polled 73,880 votes compared with 29,983 votes for his main rival Momin Ali from BNP-led Islamist alliance. -AFP
