Delhi allays Dhaka's concerns

By Our Correspondent

DHAKA, June 4: The Bangladesh foreign minister said on Friday that the new leadership in Delhi had assured Dhaka it wanted to resolve outstanding problems through dialogue instead of imposing unilateral decisions.

Morshed Khan made the statement at Zia International Airport on return from a five-day tour of India. "The Indian authorities have assured us that they would not take any project, which is difficult to afford for neighbouring Bangladesh," Mr Morshed said, referring to his discussions with Indian officials on sensitive issues like security, terrorism, water sharing.

"We (India and Bangladesh) have given commitment to solve problems peacefully through discussion, although we didn't have agenda-based discussion during the trip," he added.

He said the two sides had decided to address security concern jointly. "We will not hide anything under the carpet, rather place all the bilateral issues on the table. Those may not be resolved overnight, but we would find the answers today or tomorrow," the foreign minister said.
