ISLAMABAD, June 2: The Election Commission of Pakistan on Wednesday adjourned till June 9 the inquiry into the allegations of violence and irregularities during by-elections to one PA and three NA seats in Karachi.

The commission adjourned the proceedings on the request of Additional Advocate General Sindh Dr Qazi Khalid Ali and Nawab Mirza advocate on the grounds that a constitutional petition challenging the jurisdiction of the Election Commission to hold an inquiry into the Karachi by-elections was pending before the Sindh High Court, and has been fixed for Thursday (June 3).

The inquiry meeting into the alleged "grave irregularities" and violence in the May 12 by-elections is expected to be heard on June 9. The commission had earlier stayed the announcement of official results of the constituencies NA-240 Karachi-II, NA-243 Karachi-V, NA-246 Karachi-VIII and PS-127 Karachi-XXXIX on the allegations of irregularities and violence as eight people were killed and 28 were injured during the by-elections in Karachi.
