UN to prepare review on water crisis

ISLAMABAD, May 31: The United Nations Disaster Management Team in Pakistan met on Monday and discussed the issue of water contamination and subsequent outbreak of gastroenteritis disease and skin complaints reported in Hyderabad over the past few days.

According to an official statement, the meeting was presided over by UN Resident Coordinator Onder Yucer and was attended by officials of the WHO, Unicef, UNFPA, UNDP, FAO, national and international NGOs and the Economic Affairs Division.

The statement said the UN would prepare a detailed technical review on the causes, effects and potential remedies to the problem within the next two weeks. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Yucer said: "The review will include proposals for long-term remedial measures within the water supply systems of Hyderabad and adjoining areas."
