1,000 Bangladesh govt officials vanish abroad

DHAKA, May 30: Bangladesh is trying to bring home and take action against some 1,000 government officials who vanished abroad while undergoing training or education, a report said on Sunday.

Letters have been sent to the known addresses of the officials who went missing in foreign countries, including Australia and the United States, the Bengali-language tabloid Manabzamin said.

It said some of them may have decided to stay abroad for political reasons but that the absence of 1,000 officials had hurt the functioning of government at home. The government plans to initiate action against the missing employees it finds, such as forcing them to retire, said the report, which quoted official sources. -AFP
