SHEIKHUPURA, May 28: The four youngsters, who were arrested by the district police few days ago for allegedly gang-raping and killing a college student, were remanded by the A-Division police on Friday.

The police claimed that they had recently solved the mystery of the murder after 20 months. The four suspects have been identified as Shahab Sarwar son of a municipal committee's former vice-chairman, Usman Maan, Saifur Rahman and Yasir.

The police said the girl was gang-raped by the four youths and poisoned to death when she threatened to divulge the secret. Her body was thrown near the QB link canal in Bhekhi police station precinct, about 18 kilometres from here, three days after her abduction.

During preliminary investigation, main suspect Shahab Sarwar claimed that he had illicit relations with the girl for the last several years. He said he and his friends abducted the girl on Sept 9, 2002, from the Sheikhupura Stadium and took her to a hotel where they raped her.

He claimed that they again raped her at a housing colony and took refuge at the residence of contractor Zafarullah, a relative of Yasir. Shahab said they poisoned the girl to death when she threatened that she would let the cat out of bag.
