KARACHI, May 28: The Transport and Communication Department of the city government has asked all the town administrations to remove 150 illegal speed breakers built on 32 major thoroughfares in the city.

District officer, Road Safety Education, TCD, Zafar Ihsan said this while delivering a lecture on road safety at the National institute of Labour Administration Training on Friday.

He said these illegal speed breakers constructed for prevention of traffic accidents by different organizations and citizens, were the main cause of growing incidence of traffic accidents, adding that particularly the speed breakers, which were not marked properly were 'death traps' for motorcyclists, especially in the night.

He said the TCD had sent the standard designs of speed breakers to town nazims, asking them to ensure proper marking of these, besides asking them to erect warning boards to keep the drivers informed of the same.

He viewed that it was necessary to amend the existing traffic laws to reduce accident rate and that drivers involved in deadly accidents should be dealt strictly.

He said that plan to construct 490 bus shelters on built, operate and transfer basis had been approved by city nazim, whereas work on 36 pedestrian bridges had also been initiated to improve city's traffic system. -PPI
