PESHAWAR, May 26: Students of the Municipal Inter College have blamed that the officer in charge of the cardiovascular ward of the Lady Reading Hospital for the death their college fellow.
Accompanied by dozens of students at a press conference held at the press club, Sajjad Ahmed, a classmate of Hazrat Ali, who died of a cardiovascular injury on May 10, said that he was admitted to a private hospital, Al-Zuhra Medical Centre, where the doctor operated upon him.
The student alleged that the doctor had neither sought the consent of the patient nor of his parents. Mr Ahmed Sajjad said that Hazrat Ali was shifted to the LRH after developing serious post-operation complications, where he was admitted to the intensive care unit.
According to him, Hazrat Ali died after remaining at the ICU for 10 days. Mr Ahmed said, quoting the doctors, that he was kept on respiratory monitor in the unit and his classmates were kept in the dark.
He said the private hospital, where Hazrat Ali was operated upon lacked basic facilities and there was no other doctor to cope with emergency. "Except from a few paramedics, nobody could be seen at the hospital and the doctor is the only doctor present there for some hours.
"The patients admitted there remained at the mercy of a few dispensers, who are supposed to cater to emergency," Mr Ahmed claimed. He also blamed the surgeon for deceiving the parents of the boy, who told him that the operation would take only 30 minutes.
"As a matter of fact, it was a major operation which lasted for six hours. The surgeon was incapable to do it. To save his skin, he shifted the patient to the Lady Reading Hospital," he added.
He demanded of the chief minister, provincial minister for health and other authorities concerned to probe into the matter impartially and award exemplary punishment to those responsible for the death of his classmate.
