Islamabad, Riyadh to boost anti-terror cooperation

RIYADH, May 25: Pakistan and Saudi Arabia have agreed to increase their cooperation on terrorism-related issues. This was decided after a meeting between Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali and Saudi leaders on Tuesday.

Mr Jamali also called on the Saudi King Fahd and discussed with him issues of mutual interest. Giving the Pakistan perspective on the situation in the subcontinent, the prime minister told the King that Pakistan was keen to have composite dialogue with India on all issues, including the Jammu & Kashmir.

Mr Jamali extended Islamabad's wholehearted support to the Middle East Peace Plan as was proposed by Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah. During the meetings on Tuesday, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia leaders also agreed to stay in close touch with each other and enhance their level of ongoing cooperation on issues of terrorism.

In this regard both sides agreed to exchange information on terrorism related issues. Pakistan also expressed its full support to the Saudi leadership in its fight against terrorism.

The two leaders also discussed the overall situation in the Middle East with particular reference to Iraq, Palestine and Afghanistan. The Pakistan side expressed its full support to the Middle East peace initiative initiated by Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah.

Mr Jamali reiterated Pakistan's readiness to contribute to the process wherever required. King Fahd reportedly expressed his good wishes to the leadership and the people of Pakistan.

INTERIOR MINISTER: Later, during a meeting with Saudi Interior Minister Prince Naif bin Abdul Aziz, Prime Minister Jamali on expressed Pakistan's support and understanding of Saudi efforts against terrorism and offered all possible cooperation to Saudi Arabia in the fight against the menace, adds APP.

The prime minister informed Saudi Interior Minister Prince Naif bin Abdul Aziz during a meeting that Pakistan would be willing to train Saudi officials and extend every form of cooperation to the country. Mr Jamali said Pakistan understood and supported the steps taken by the Saudi Government to counter the incidents of extremism, violence and terrorism.

During the meeting, the two leaders agreed to increase the bilateral coordination and exchange of information. Prince Naif said that Saudi Arabia was extending cooperation to other GCC countries, Arab and Muslim world in this field.

The prime minister held out an assurance that Pakistan would take all measures to reinforce cooperation in this field. Prince Naif said that the Saudi government attached great importance to Pakistan's role in the OIC and the region as well as to policies being pursued by the government against terrorism and extremism.

He expressed appreciation for President Pervez Musharraf's concept of Enlightened Moderation and expressed the hope that it would help project Muslim Ummah in a positive light.
