SIALKOT, May 21: The district government claimed on Friday to have achieved the wheat procurement target of 610,000 million bags. District Food Controller Rohail Butt told a meeting here that the wheat had been purchased at Rs350 per 40kg.

Presiding over a meeting, DCO Syed Tahir Raza Naqvi directed the food department officials to continue procuring wheat from the official centres. He said the government had announced cash for the local department officials, besides rewards for those who would achieve their targets.

Taking up another issue, District Officer (social welfare) Shaukat Javed Siddiqui told the meeting that more than 1,000 deserving people had yet to be given funds from Baitul Maal.

DEATH ANNIVERSARY: The Kashmiris in Sialkot and Narowal on Friday observed the 14th death anniversary of their leader Mirwaiz Maulvi Muhammad Farooq. Quran Khwani was held at all the major mosques for the departed soul. Besides, several condolence meetings and references were held in which the local Kashmiri leaders paid homage to Maulvi Farooq for his struggle for the freedom of the Occupied Jammu and Kashmir, read a press release.

TWO KILLED: A woman and her son were stabbed to death by their servant in Tahou village here on Friday. Ghulam Rasool was employed by one Salim, 50. He recently embraced Islam and demanded the hand of his master's daughter who rejected his proposal.

His refusal infuriated Ghulam Rasool who attacked Salim and his mother Hakim Bibi, 70, with a knife and killed them. Their hue and cry attracted the attention of their neighbours who chased and caught the fleeing killer and handed him over to cantonment police.

CASE REGISTERED: Motra police registered a case against the owner of a brick kiln and his accomplices on the report of labourer Ashraf. He told police that kiln owner Noman Elahi Pasha and his accomplices Umar Din, Sharif and women Razia and Manzoor tortured Ashraf and his wife Bashiran, daughters Kausar, 11, Sughra, 7, Rani, 12, and two-year-old son Adil who were also working at his kiln along with him.
