MMA to boycott CEC probe commission
ISLAMABAD May 19: The Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal has decided to boycott the proceedings of the inquiry commission constituted by the chief election commission which would start recording statements in Islamabad on Thursday.
Talking to the MMA Sindh leaders and contesting candidates in by-polls, Sindh MMA President Asadullah Bhutto has said that the alliance holds the CEC responsible for the killing of its 12 youths during the incidents of terrorism and lawlessness unleashed by the Muttahida Qaumi Movement on the by-election day.
He said the MMA has demanded an inquiry commission consisting of three senior supreme court judges so that the facts were thrashed out for the general public. The CEC, he said, should resign by taking the responsibility of the killing and widespread terrorism during polling on May 12, Mr Bhutto said.
He recalled the alliance delegation's meeting with the CEC in which a memorandum was also submitted on May 4 thereby warning about the grave law and order situation due to the MQM's activities. Along with memorandum documentary proofs about the situation prevailing in the by-elections in Karachi were also produced.
As a result of the meeting and memorandum the CEC had announced to deploy army and to take other steps to curb the chances of lawlessness on polling day. The attention of the CEC was invited towards newspapers' reports on May 9 by telling him that the actions proposed by him for holding smooth by-polls were not implemented and rather halted by the Sindh member of Election Commission justice Sadiq Leghari.
The CEC, however, failed to conduct fair, free and transparent by-polls and hence he has become partial and disputed person who cannot be trusted for delivering justice, concluded the MMA leader.
