Indian govt to continue peace talks, hopes PM

By Our Staff Reporter

ISLAMABAD May 19: Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali on Wednesday expressed the hope that under the new prime minister, the Indian government would continue the process of normalization of relations with Pakistan initiated by the outgoing Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee.

Talking to newsmen at a hotel after attending the ceremony of the National Alliance's merger with the PML, Mr Jamali said he was optimistic that the new Indian prime minister would enhance bilateral contacts on all disputed issues between the two countries in the interest of regional peace.

He said so far as Pakistan was concerned, it had great expectations with the coming dialogue with India and Islamabad would start the talks with a positive mind. Earlier, speaking at the function of the NA merger with the PML, the prime minister said the merger of the three-party alliance with the PML, which had its separate identity till today, was a big opportunity to give the country political stability.

He particularly appreciated the goodwill gesture of Ghulam Mustafa Jatoi towards the PML. He said Chaudhry Shujaat was elected party president in the joint meeting of League factions last week and he would run the party under a concept of collective leadership since it was not the job of one man.

He said all of us had the responsibility of taking Pakistan forward by burying the past. President Gen Pervez Musharraf, he said, had given a new direction and new vision and in fact a new life to the country by his wise actions.
