KARACHI: Government slammed over water, power crises

KARACHI, May 17: The Pakistan People's Party has strongly condemned the Sindh government's silence over the persisting crises of water and power in the city and criticized the governor, chief minister and ministers for indulging in a fight against each others over seats.

In a statement issued here on Monday, the PPP's Sindh council members claimed that during the previous tenure of the PPP, load shedding in the city had been eliminated and the complaints of excessive billing removed. However, they said, following the dissolution of the democratic government, power tariff had been doubled over a period of seven years.

The non-civilian management of the KESC has been receiving millions as 'extra charges' from the citizens in the name of overcoming the power crisis, said the members, and added the citizens were being tortured on the pretext of power theft. "Still, the KESC is facing losses," they wondered.

About the package recently announced by the KESC, they pointed out that it offered a waiver of 30 per cent of dues outstanding against a defaulter on the condition of lump sum payment. "But it is not being done by KESC," they claimed.

PROTEST: PPP MNAs Nabil Gabol and Sher Mohammad Baloch have condemned police for subjecting the party workers and polling agents to baton charge for staging a protest demonstration against irregularities in by-elections in front of the Election Commission's office in the city.

In a statement, the MNAs said the PPP candidates and polling agents in the by-polls and hundreds of workers who had been tortured during the elections, had staged the demonstration on Monday to register their protest.

The maintained that the demonstrators wanted to apprise the EC of the facts with evidences but, they alleged, under the directives of provincial government, police meted out an inhuman treatment to the protesters.

They alleged that the PPP leaders, activists and supporters had not been allowed to run their election campaign freely. "The atrocities and maltreatment committed by provincial ministers and advisers are on record," they claimed. -PPI
