MMA discusses vital issues today

By Ahmed Hassan

ISLAMABAD May 16: The supreme council of Muttahida Majlis-i- Amal (MMA) has convened its emergency meeting on Monday to discuss and chalk out a strategy to handle the ARD's opposition to its nominee Maulana Fazlur Rahman as leader of the opposition in the National Assembly , the alliance sources said on Sunday.

Five out of the six-party heads are expected to attend the meeting presided over by the acting president of the alliance, Qazi Hussain Ahmed, at his residence. Maulana Samiul Haq, chief of his own faction of JUI, who has not been attending such meetings for the last few months, is expected to skip this meeting as well.

The alliance, which has failed to address its internal feuds specially with reference to Maulana Samiul Haq who along with his MNA son, Hamidul Haq Haqqani, has accepted chairmanships of the Senate and NA house committees in violation of the party line, will be facing some serious soul-searching questions.

The alliance will consider lack of implementation of its directives to the NWFP government to induct one member each from three smaller parties in the provincial cabinet to win them back.

The alliance will also face the critical issue of election of its new president as Qazi Hussain Ahmed has been running its affairs as acting president since the death of Maulana Shah Ahmed Noorani few months back.
