MANSEHRA, May 9: The opposition leader in the NWFP Assembly, Shahzada Mohammad Gustasip Khan, said on Sunday that the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal leadership had failed to honour its promises made to the people.
Speaking at a news conference at the press club, he said that instead of providing justice to the people and combating crimes and drug addiction, MMA leaders were busy in enjoying the perks and privileges of their posts.
He alleged that the MMA had launched a parallel system of government in the districts, which had rendered the district nazims powerless. He said interference of unelected people unofficially empowered by the MMA government had marred the working of the institutions and credibility of the law-enforcement agencies.
He said the situation had adversely effected the law and order situation and crimes like kidnapping for ransom had risen during the last 14 months. He said elements in the MMA did not hesitate in spending huge amounts on their publicity campaigns but they had not issued any statement to condemn the incidents of kidnapping for ransom, which were on the rise in Hazara.
He said that the departments concerned should take notice of activities of some people whose wealth had increased manifold to ascertain if they were involved in patronizing criminals.
He said extremist elements were still following their agenda of intolerance and sectarianism and they did not hesitate in desecrating mosques of other sects. He said those elements rejected the results of the general election, stormed the courts here, disgraced the officers of judiciary and promoted lawlessness and anarchy for weeks.
Such elements were also involved in the suicide attack on a mosque in Karachi, he said. Shahzada Gustasip said heroin addiction had taken the form of an epidemic in the province. He alleged that influential people were patronizing drug trade in the area but the MMA government was not taking notice of it.
He said he had raised the issue in the assembly but the MMA government did not take action against heroin peddling, neither did it establish rehabilitation centres for addicts.
He appealed to the citizens and ulema to help the law enforcers in fighting heroine addiction. Replying to a question, he dispelled the impression that he had decided to join the Pakistan Muslim League (Q).
He said that as the opposition leader he enjoyed cordial relations with all its parties, which adopted a joint strategy on all the issues in the house.
