ISLAMABAD, May 7: Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali on Friday said Pakistan would prefer appointment of the new OIC secretary-general by the member states with consensus rather than election.

He was speaking to Ambassador Hasmy bin Agam, Malaysian candidate for the post of OIC secretary-general, who had called on him. The new official will be appointed during the 31st Meeting of the OIC Foreign Ministers scheduled for June 14-16 in Istanbul. The tenure of the incumbent secretary-general will expire in December.

The prime minister underlined Pakistan's deep commitment to OIC objectives and said Islamabad would like to work in partnership with Malaysia, the current chairman of the 10th Summit Conference for reforming the OIC.

Ambassador Agam conveyed the greetings of Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi to the prime minister and also briefed him on the forthcoming Ministerial Meeting of NAM Committee on Palestine to be held on May 13 in Kuala Lumpur. -APP
